Various Artists: Legends Play The Beatles

It's hard to improve upon perfection and that is never truer than when it comes to a cover album of Beatles' tunes. Still, a dozen musical legends make a fabulous effort as they pay homage to the Fab Four on "Legends Play The Beatles". Admittedly released to capitalize on the next wave of Beatlmania in advance of the much anticipated Peter Jackson documentary on the mop tops who came of age on Capitol Records. The 12 tracks here re-imagine some of the Liverpool lad's very best. If we had to drill down to the very core the apples of our eye on this collection would be Ann Wilson's mystical and moving cover of "Across the Universe" along with John Wetton's upbeat rendition of "Penny Lane" with a fine flute break rounded out by his double vox and chorus. Andrew Gold also turns in a praiseworthy performance of "Norwegian Wood" that stays closest to the song's original form complete with the all-important psychedelic sitar that screams Beatlesque.
